Leighton Mills Hoochie Coochie

South London born DJ Leighton Mills brings an eclectic mix of styles, supporting both new and old artists firmly rooted in black music culture.

From those early, heady days of the 90’s playing soulful house, supporting the likes of Phil Asher and Bobbi and Steve, Leighton now is well established as a true purveyor of Funk, Soul and Jazz.

He also has writing credits on songs such as The Getup’s Put it in your pipe and The Honeyshotz Things you do.

“Music has always been a very important part of my life, i loved those early days of clubbing in the 90’s, particulary at venues such as Steppers in Coldharbour Lane, Brixton and Garage City with the legenday Paul Anderson.
“Those times were great but then my musical taste significantly shifted upon the birth of the Acid Jazz scene. Live bands seemed to offer so much more than the standard four on the floor backdrop of dance music, regular trips to see The Brand New Heavies, Incognito, JTQ, Corduroy to name a few were now becoming my staple.”
And to this day evidence of those acts still flourish in his sets.

A regular visitor to The Jazz Cafe, Smollensky’s and Ronnies, Leighton now finds himself residing and playing in the North East of England and can be regularly heard at his “Spiritual home” Hoochie Coochie.
He has recently supported Roy Ayers and The Haggis Horns, and also plays the Annual King Bee Xmas Party.
“I love the place, anyone who knows the live music scene will understand how important these venues are to supporting and creating opportunities for old and current acts. Warren Thomson (the owner) has provided the people of the region with a place that not only rivals those down South but in many ways betters them too.”
“The North East is currently a hotbed for UK Soul and has many well established acts including Smoove and Turrell, Nick Pride and the Pimptones, King Bee, Soulutions and many more, and for me it’s a real pleasure to be a small part of it all.”
